Babbling on about Asexuality in response to an ask
Good evening, tumblr! Lets have a little heart to heart here. And by heart to heart I mostly mean you sit there while I babble on about being asexual in response to a really great, respectful ask that wanted to know more.
First off, let’s define those words, and then ramble about them a lot. I’m going to define them in my own voice, which someone else might have a problem with, and there are better, more straightforward explanations out there, but the person who asked specifically wanted to hear it from a person, not a clinical website.
Someone who says they’re asexual doesn’t feel physical, sexual attraction/inclination. This doesn’t mean they can’t appreciate that someone is attractive, it’s just a bit more detached. This does not mean that they don’t want to have relationships: they might identify as something romantically. This doesn’t mean they will never have sex. Sex is generally an unimportant part of the relationship for an asexual, but some asexuals are totally up for it. There are varying degrees to all of the above, it really just depends on the person.
And because it’s one of the first things braver people ask, it doesn’t mean an asexual person cant be aroused, or never masturbates. Not everyone does, but it’s often seen as just another function of the body.
Someone who is aromantic doesn’t feel those warm squishy romantic emotional attraction feelings for someone else. The emotional asexual. This does not mean that they don’t love people, or that they are incapable of forming emotional bonds. They just dont have the same needs or desires for a romantic relationship. You can be sexually attracted to people and still be aromantic, you don’t have to be asexual.
And then you have people like me. I am an aromantic asexual. Double whammy on those orientations that most people have never heard of!
NOW THAT THE DEFINITION PART IS OVER, LET’S JUST TALK ABOUT THIS FOR A WHILE IN A WANDERING AND KIND OF UNLINEAR MANNER ADDRESSING SOME OF THE QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK IN ROUNDABOUT WAYS
